Anne drives with her foster mother, Marilla Cuthbert, to White Sands to see Mrs. Spencer. There they should finally find out why the Cuthberts got a girl sent from the orphanage instead of the boy they were longing for. Along the way, Anne tells her foster mother the sad story of her childhood. But it doesn't look like Anne will be able to dissuade Marilla from her plan to send her back to the orphanage.
