In the 1880s, the vampire DIO, the enemy of the Joestar family, possesses the body of the deceased Jonathan Joestar and survives by hiding in a coffin for a hundred years. In 1983, the coffin holding DIO is salvaged from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Over 1986 and 1987, manifestations of life energy known as Stands emerge from Jonathan's grandson Joseph Joestar and teenage great-great grandson Jotaro Kujo. In Japan in 1987, Jotaro has willingly turned himself into jail, refusing to leave as he believes his Stand with precise movements, Star Platinum,[f] is an evil spirit that is possessing him. Joseph flies in from New York with his friend, the Egyptian Stand user Mohammed Avdol, to coax Jotaro out of his cell. Avdol's fire-manipulating Stand Magician's Red challenges Jotaro which causes Star Platinum to appear. When Jotaro leaves his cell, Joseph tells Jotaro about DIO and Stands and how DIO is the likely cause of their Stands emerging. Elsewhere, DIO senses the presence of the Joestars and resolves to kill them.
