Teddy Kent and Perry Miller join Ilse in what becomes Emily's small group of friends. Teddy has a keen talent for drawing, but his mother for some obscure reason opposes this gift from him. Emily also has problems, because her aunt Elisabeth forbids her to waste time on the novels and poems that she loves so much.
