Marius wants to support himself in his studies, he has found a job as a translator but the money is never enough. So he decides to change accommodation, finding an apartment on the outskirts of Paris, run down but very cheap. He does not know yet, but in the same condominium lives the very Thénardier whom he has sought so much and who has now fallen into poverty and lives by means of expedients with his family.
