Subaru wonders how the long-dead Echidna can be here, to which she reveals that they are in a mental space that houses her soul before inviting him for tea. After probing each other for information for a while, Subaru recalls his objective and leaves. Waking up back at the ruin, Subaru is then attacked by Sanctuary's Guardian, Garfiel, until he mentions Frederica, causing him to stop. Subaru then meets up with the others and Garfiel escorts them to Roswaal and Ram. Roswaal reveals that Sanctuary's barrier keeps halfbreeds in, including Emilia, and that the only way to break it is to pass a trial; Roswaal attempted it but was rejected due to him not being a half-breed. Garfiel then reveals that Sanctuary's inhabitants have taken the Irlam villagers hostage and demand Emilia take the trial, which she agrees to. That evening, Emilia takes the trial at the ruin, but Subaru follows her when something seems wrong. Having been allowed to partake in the trial by Echidna, Subaru once again falls unconscious and inexplicably wakes up back in Japan.
