Joseph Openshaw, an "anti-tech" who dislikes modern technology, is startled when he receives five orange seeds and is apparently poisoned. He sends his young son John to bring Holmes to him. Holmes insists on bringing Watson despite objections from John and John's uncle Elias, who also distrust modern technology.
