Jean Valjean surrenders to Javert, but asks him to take Marius back to his grandfather's house to be able to cure him and to return to his house to be able to say goodbye to his daughter. During the carriage ride Jean Valjean tells the whole story of him to Javert and this cracks in the policeman all his certainties about the fact that a man can never change.
