Marius will soon finish his law studies and has decided that he will collaborate in the efforts of Cosette's father by offering the poorest legal protection that is denied them, both for misery and ignorance of the laws. He then asks Cosette to marry him and shortly thereafter, together with their grandfather, they have a small engagement party at Cosette's house.
