By now autumn is ending and Cosette decides to return to Montfermeil and then go to Montreuil-sur-Mer in order to visit the places of her childhood and the last years of her mother's life. In Montreuil-sur-Mer she discovers that her father, of whom she knows nothing of the past, is well-liked by all the citizens and had even once been the town's mayor.
